II. Body A. Straight forward 1. Hermia told Theseus she would rather become a nun than marry Demetrius. 2. Helena told Demetrius she was his spaniel. 3. Titania told Oberon that she would never give him the changeling boy. B. Androgynous 1. Hermia was disloyal and went against her father. 2. Titania overrules Oberon and gains control of the relationship. 3. Hippolyta fights against Theseus. C. Strong-willed 1. Titania III. Conclusion Women throughout history have shown wonderful characteristics. From Rosa Parks to Helen Keller, women have shown robust and autonomous mindsets. Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed in and Helen Keller never gave up. Even though most every woman shows this frame of mind, each woman is unique in her own way. These propositions about women are shown in a number of William Shakespeare’s works. Shakespeare portrays women through A Midsummer Night’s Dream as being straightforward, androgynous, and strong willed; however, showing every woman as being unique. A Midsummer Night’s Dream shows women as being straightforward. Three examples are Hermia, Helena, and Titania. Hermia showed candid characteristics by telling Theseus that she would rather become a nun than marry Demetrius. Helena was blunt by telling Demetrius that she was his spaniel. Titania was forthright by telling Oberon she would never give him the changeling boy. Hermia and Helena are young women who are looking for love and are trying to start their own life. Hippolyta is about to get married and start a family. Titania has married and has taken a boy under her wing. These women are unique for a number of reasons and one reason is the place they are in their life timeline. The four females in A Midsummer Night’s Dream have diverse priorities. Since Hermia and Helena are young, they don’t have many priorities; however, they still have things to do things just like any other mademoiselle. Hippolyta is about to become queen so one of her top priorities will be to rule the kingdom alongside Theseus. Titania’s top priorities are the kingdom of fairies and the changeling boy. Every person in the universe has priorities to fill from being a parent to being a missionary in Africa. In conclusion, Hermia, Helena, Hippolyta, and Titania share common traits and are different in a number of ways. Since Shakespeare shows his idea of woman through these characters, I can conclude that he has a high respect for females. In my opinion, he has an equal respect for males and females. Just like the women marked down in history, the females in A Midsummer Night’s Dream were brave and headstrong. Eventually, when I become a grown woman, I hope to share the unique characteristics that Shakespeare writes these women
