The narrator of the poem is observing another boy on the subway. She views the boy as being different from himself. The narrator starts by observing the other boy’s appearance; she does so by using simile and imagery. First; she describes the boy’s shoes as being laced with white in a complex pattern like a set of intentional scars. She then continues on to say” He is wearing red, like the inside of the body exposed.” The narrator does this in order to help the reader paint a mental picture of the boy. Also, describing what the boy is wearing on a deeper level helps make the boy’s outfit seem meaningful. The narrator then compares the boys to himself.
