Assignment Mauritshuis The first painting that I have chosen is: de Stier. This painting is painted by Paulus Potter in 1647. The technique that is used is oil and you can place it under the art movement: Baroque, this was a style that was commonly used in the Golden Age. The material that is used is canvas. The message of this painting is that the cow was a symbol of prosperity for the Dutch people, but it can also be used as a symbol for the Dutch republic. You can see flies on the cow and poop that was painted. For us this is very normal, but in that time it was very special that this was actually painted. I have chosen this painting, because a man in the Mauritshuis came to me and said something about this picture and it was a nice story that he told me, so I wanted to use this painting and the size was very large and that also fascinated me.…show more content…
The painting is about Michiel de Ruyter. This painting was painted in 1667. This painting is in baroque style, but it is also a sort of portrait of Michiel de Ruyter, it is painted in the same time as de Stier that is why it is both in baroque style. In this painting the technique which is used is also oil, here again you can recognize the similarity between the 2 paintings, because it is painted at the same time. The material that is used is canvas. I went to the movie and I found it a very interesting and fascinating movie and that is why I have chosen this painting. He was a great man and this painting has a beautiful frame with the weaponry he used and above his head in the middle of the frame is the family crest of the Ruyters. Michiel de Ruyter potraited himself, so he remembered the day that he won his 4 day long sea battle against the English every time he saw this
