People in our society typically have a hard time accepting others that are different from themselves. “Same Love” by Macklemore expresses one of these judgements. The song talks about how the singer thought that he was gay when he was younger and about how people interpret people that are gay. The lyrics show how many have bad views and opinions about people who like the same sex and how it affects some gays. Sadly, people who prefer the opposite sex don’t always understand being gay. In the eleventh line of the first verse it states, “The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision.” Right wing conservatives are Republicans and they believe that being gay is a decision. Many people who are gay would argue that being gay isn’t a choice, it’s a characteristic that they are born with. In a different part of the song, the singer backs this up is in the twelfth and thirteenth line of the first verse. These lines read, “And you can be cured with some treatment and religion/ Man-made rewiring of a predisposition.” This translates that people think being gay is a condition and a person…show more content…
In the seventh and eighth line of the second verse Macklemore sings, “ Call each other faggots behind the keys of a message board/ A word rooted in hate, yet our genre still ignores it.” People refer to gays as faggots and when one person calls another person a faggot, they don’t like the person. Being gay is viewed as being a bad thing by many so this name is used as an insult. Also, lines six and seven of the third verse shows an instance where gays don’t feel comfortable. These line state, “When the kids are walking ‘round the hallway plagued by a pain in their heart/ A word so hateful some would rather die than be who they are.” Many gays don’t come out and tell people who they are because they know how others will treat them.
