The films that I have chosen to discuss and examine the radical use of sound in are “North by Northwest “(1958) and
Alfred Hitchcock has been complimented numerous times by critics for his deliberate and calculated use of sound and music in his films . The use of sound and music in Hitchcock's films coupled with his strong visuals and his many editing styles gives the viewers a a very strong audio and visual spectacle. In recent times a lot of attention have been highlighted toward Hitchcock's use of music and sounds in his films as it is a very important and integral role in his films and the films narrative arrangement and flow . The reason for this attention, is due to the popularity and the success of “Jack Sullivan's Hitchcock's Music” (2006). In this book the sole center point is on the parameters of the directors brilliance and the great skill involved in their creative endeavors. To highlight and explain the massive contributions that composer Bernard Herrmann made to films in general with his sound, but in particular to Hitchcock's critically acclaimed film North by Northwest. From the of the film it set out a psychedelic and Hallucinogenic tone. The tone of the film due to the score sets and places the film and an instantly recognizable era in America the late 1960s. The tone of the score compliments and enhances the dreamlike scenes that are displayed on screen in the film. The opening series of shots then slowly fade into “The End”. The song is by the Doors and has quite and exotic feel too it.
