Nixon argues that men who are not rich should be able to run for public office. Nixon makes a good point, that he is not rich, but still has served his country well. Nixon has given a speech called “Checkers” in that speech he has given two claims. One of the claims he makes implicity is that he has not earned a lot money in his service. The other claim he makes explicity is that he has served his country for many years.
Nixon has served his country for many years. In the “Checkers” speech Nixon says, “I have received a total in this past six years of 1600 dollars” (Nixon, 1952). The quote from the “Checkers” speech explains that Nixon has served his country for about six years. In conjunction with the “Checkers” speech he says, “Then, in 1942, I went into the service. Based on what Nixon said in his speech, he has only earned 1600 dollars for his past six years, which is not a lot of money in his service. Another example, that Nixon has not earned a lot of money in his service is, “I owe 3500 dollars to my parents, and the interest on that loan” (Nixon, 1952). If Nixon has owes money to his parents, that means that he has not earned enough money in his service, so he had to take money from his parents. Another example that Nixon has not earned a lot of money in his service is, “And then I have a 500 dollar loan, which I have on my life insurance” (Nixon, 1952). Nixon has quite a lot of loans, which means that he has not earned a lot of money in his service. Nixon wants his fellow Americans to know that he has not earned a lot of money in his service, but still serves his country
