Nikki Giovanni Poet, Writer, Activist, and Dreamer Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, Jr was Nikki’s real name. She was born in Knoxville, TN on June 7, 1943 and was raised in Cincinnati, OH. She was one of four children born to Jones Giovanni and Yolande Cornelia Watson Giovanni. Her mother was born in Albany, GA and her father was born in Mobile, AL. Growing up Nikki loved to read anything she could get her hands on. She enjoyed various authors and accredits several for her inspiration in becoming an author. Nikki grew up in Lincoln Heights, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH, and in 1958, she moved with her grandparents in Knoxville and attended Austin High School. After graduating High school Nikki furthered her education at Fisk University. “Nikki received her B.A. in History, with distinction, on 28 January and went on to attend graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University in New York”. (Morrow) Nikki published her first book of poetry “Black feeling, Black Talk” and also “Black Judgment” in her early life both poems show an advocates point of view as Giovanni investigates her becoming of political and transcendental mindfulness.…show more content…

Nikki Giovanni main focus was not just poetry she touched on racial subjects that many people would be afraid to speak on. She spoke about the Montgomery bus Boycott in 1955. She talked about how Rosa Parks was the reason why the Boycott started, and how women made the situation
