Question Broad question: Do nerve signals work like a string or a fuse? Is the speed of nerve signals measurable? Narrow question: How much time does it take the nerve signal to travel from ankle to shoulder for a person? Alternatives Nerves are like a fuse and there is a time delay in impulse of the nerve. Nerves are like a string and impulse of nerves are instantaneous and not measurable. Logic Nerves are like a fuse, if the reaction time is high between the moment you feel the stimulus and the moment where you respond. Nerves are like a string, if there is no reaction time or very less time between the moment you feel the stimulus and the moment where you respond. Method The independent variable in this experiment is stimulus tap on the shoulder and the squeeze on the ankle. The dependent variable in this experiment is the amount of time it will take the nerve signal to travel from ankle to shoulder. The class was divided into 3 teams forming a chain, team 1 consisted of 29 people, team 2 consisted of 26 people and team 3 consisted of 27 people. In…show more content…
But in fact nerve signals take time to travel, there is a reaction time between the moment you feel the stimulus and the moment where you respond. This experiment was able to show us nerves signals are measurable and not instant therefore nerve signals work like a fuse. When the stimulus was felt, the person was able to respond by either squeezing the ankle or tapping the shoulder, which showed us that a message had passed down from the point of stimulation to the muscle causing each person to respond. The reaction time explained that it takes our brain to decide what to do, and the time it takes the nerve signal to travel from the stimulus to the brain and then to the muscle in our hands. This experiment eliminated the alternative that nerves are like a string and nerve signals are instantaneous and not
