The article that I chose was printed in a newspaper called the New York World on Sunday October 9th, 1887. The New York World, primarily a democratic publication focused on conservative principals, pioneered yellow journalism. The article, written by Nellie Bly, was an exposé on a New York women’s insane asylum located on Blackwell’s Island. Titled “Behind Asylum Bars,” the article chronicles Bly’s infiltration and subsequent escape from the asylum. The only reason that Bly took the case was because she was penniless but well educated. Pulitzer, then the owner of the World, convinced her to get herself committed with the promise of pulling her back out again.
