Narrative therapy seeks to be a non-blaming style to counseling. It was developed by Michael White and David Epston in 1980’s. This form of therapy became more widespread in the 90’s. In narrative therapy, clients are considered the experts of their own lives. There are three techniques mainly used, which involve externalizing, deconstructing and re-authoring. Narrative therapy can be used for families, as well as, individuals. It encourages the participants to simply tell their story (problem) in an effort to change the outcome. The primary objective of the narrative approach is analyzing the clients’ expression of their life experiences.
