My sixth grade class is beginning to read Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. I have created a list of vocabulary for the first chapter that will be necessary for vocabulary comprehension. Some of the vocabulary words included in the first chapter is bellowing, orphan, and legend. To teach these vocabulary words I would teach them using synonyms. Synonyms are words that are similar in meaning to other words. Synonym instruction is valuable when children have knowledge of a concept but unfamiliar with its label.
