My Papa’s Waltz Theodore Roethke, an eighteenth-century poet who had a way of showing and teaching future generations of American poets to pursue the mysteries of one’s inner self. Roethke, however, had a very hard life. He grew up in Saginaw, Michigan. His father was a German immigrant, who owned and ran his own greenhouse. Roethke loved to read and write in his high school days. When Roethke turned fourteen years old his father passed away with cancer and his uncle that we don’t hear about as much committed suicide. When you first read it seems to be full of happy memories, but come to find out it is full of dark days for this boy (Roethke at the time). It shows how very depressed and disturbed he was at home with his father. The little boy admired his father and held on to every minute he spent with him waltzing him to bed. In any child’s life our parents have the power of over us. When I was little I was told what to do, when to do, and it taught me a lesson. The same thing happens here in this poem. We can notice the father’s power when he leads his son into a waltz. This poem, My Papa’s Waltz, takes us through several emotions, themes and images. We learn about a relationship between a father, and a son. The relationship consisted of love, admiration and violence. It teaches us that all families are different when it comes to showing attention, affection and most importantly love. The memories that the little boy has of his father affected his life and motivated him to write about his relationship and create this poem, My Papa’s
