According to Oxford online dictionary (2012), a philosophy is defined as “The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.” Since I was a young girl I have always felt the need to take care of my peers and family and felt a strong sense of gratification when helping others which led me to pursue the career of nursing. My philosophy of nursing includes the awareness of medicine while merging it with personal, attentive care that recognizes the dignity of each patient. My personal philosophy centers on the compassion and well-being of each patient and providing well-rounded nursing care. There are many values I feel are vital in relating to patients as well as health professionals, my family, and my own health and well-being.…show more content…
I believe as a nurse I must connect with patients on a personal level and this separates physician care from nursing care. Holism in regards to medical care is defined as, “relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts-holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body” (Edition, n.d.). Meaning to me that to practice holistic nursing, I must not only be concerned with a patient’s well-being physically, but also emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. I try to make it a mission to render patient care centered upon the individual’s needs and wishes. I believe patients should always be active in his or her care and I hope to have a direct and proactive relationship with my patients so that each need is
