The Mountain Nyala is an animal that is endangered. It is a huge animal and is part of the spiral horned antelope family. They were named after the Nyala in Southern Africa, but is now thought to be similar to the great kudu. The scientific name for the Mountain Nyala is Tragelaphus Buxtoni. Mountain Nyala Males are larger than the females. Also the male’s fur is darker and shaggier than the females. Females are redder than the males and the young calves are bright rufous color. All of them, including females, have a smooth and glossy coat during summer, but it turns shaggy when winter comes. Usually there are two white spots on their faces, along with a white chevron between the eyes. Also there is a white line that goes along their backs. They can weigh up to 550 pounds. Old males can sometimes weigh up to 660 pounds. Their heads and body length is between 190-260 centimeters. And their shoulder height is usually about 53 inches. Also they have two horns coming out of their heads and the horns are usually a dark brown color. Males are the only ones that have horns and they can be from 85 centimeters to 118.7 centimeters, which is the world record, and they are curled going up. Between the times of four AM to eight PM is when they are usually active. They show their dominance to others by the way the walk, which is chest out and their heads held high. Mountain Nyala like to travel in groups of 2-13 but have been reported to being in a group of 96. A young male Mountain Nyala is usually in groups, but an older male is usually left in solitaire. When it is sunny and dry or cold and wet they usually stay in dense cover. They are hardly found under 2000 meters above sea level and can be found in 4000 meters above sea level. The country they live in is Ethiopia and the continent is Africa. They live in the eastern part of Africa along the center of it. It is also usually cold and wet in their habitat. The foods they eat are usually herbs off of plants, shrubs, grass from grasslands, ferns, and lichens off of trees. Mountain Nyala are endangered by destruction of forest and heathlands because people want roads to ride on, trails for cattle, and people are building houses to live there. Also their food is being depleted because trees are being knocked down it has lost lichens because of that. They like to eat grass, but it is hard for them in some places because of grasslands being taken away from them because of the people building homes there. They are huge animals with large horns on their heads and because of this they are being hunted for trophies. It is also being hunted for their thick meat, large horns, the latter that is used in local medicines, and their skin is used to make nipples for traditional milk bottles.
