Why Montresor is a Skilled Murderer How well do you really know a person? From past experiences, some of us may understand that it is not until a line has been crossed that we see someone for who they truly are. In Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado, we discover the hidden personalities of the main character, Montresor, as he plots revenge against his target, Fortunato. He lead his victim into the catacombs while acting friendly to hide his hate and anger. Eventually, he kills Fortunato and his plan becomes a brutal success. Because he is resentful, astute, and a sociopath, Montresor is able to accomplish a premeditated murder successfully. Montresor is resentful, as stated earlier, and he uses his past misfortunes to motivate him to avenge Fortunato. Before Montresor committed his felony, he introduces his motive and why he despises Fortunato. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” (Poe, 1). Here, Montresor states that he’s plotting some type of revenge against Fortunato’s actions, whatever they may be. We can conclude that the grudges Montresor holds affect and fuel his future actions, which in this case is murder.…show more content… Before he actually kills Fortunato, he tricks him into thinking that their situation is simply a joke. First, Montresor tells Fortunato that all of the maids have gone home for the day and that they should go to the vaults where the Amontillado is said to be located. As they make their way through the underground, Fortunato becomes intoxicated with all of the alcohol Montresor is giving him, which is done on purpose so Fortunato will be disoriented and unable to resist once Montresor’s plans come into play. Based on these tiny pieces of evidence throughout the story, we see that every single one of Montresor’s actions has an intention that play a part in Fortunato’s
