Miracle Baby On a cold winter day in January of 1999, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, Cassie Leigh Binder was born with a birth defect that would change my mind forever. Throughout my life, Cassie’s disability has taught me to have more patience and sympathy for those who have the same struggles as she has, and it also has given me responsibilities that not many other teenagers would have. “The baby was born with a hole in her heart and a birth defect called Down Syndrome.” the doctor said, “We are going to need to do surgery on her heart right away or she may not make it much longer.” I felt my heart skip a beat because I was scared to lose my baby sister. Ryan would sometimes try to give Cassie hugs and kisses and she would try to pull away, but he was a little stronger than her and usually won. I became a lot more protective of her after seeing her feel as uncomfortable as she was. I started to make sure Ryan didn’t do anything that would bother Cassie, and when he did try, I would quickly tell him, “NO!” and “Keep your hands to yourself, Ryan!”. Ryan soon gave up trying to win her heart and through middle school, he became one of Cassie’s best friends. Cassie was happy to have such a great friend and I was so happy that she was
