Good Golly Miss Miley Is Miley Cyrus a train wreck or is she a media mastermind? Many individuals would argue the former, not the latter. Previously known as the innocent Disney superstar that plays the secret role of Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus has, in her own words, transformed into a “strategic hot mess”. Although many of her fans and fellow performers felt her metamorphosis was “too shocking”, Miley Cyrus cleverly utilized the media to reinvent her image and promote her brand. It could be argued that Miley Cyrus is truly as senseless as the media portrays her to be, but that does not lessen the role that the media has in shaping public opinion on celebrity. This performance was likely a metaphor to prepare her fans for what was to come. Although the “Can’t be tamed” music video stirred up controversy, it also brought a huge boost to MTV ratings (Toomey). Miley was beginning to successfully separate herself from her second identity as Hannah Montana. Drastically cutting off her famous locks and dying her hair bleach blonde was her next step towards claiming her identity. Once she achieved this “wild” label, it changed how the media and public interpreted her behaviors. “With Lindsay Lohan rehabbed and Britney Spears under psychiatric care, the tabs are looking to Cyrus to flame out, or at least do something mildly outrageous” (Handy). By changing her identity and giving the media the entertainment they sought, Cyrus realized that this is what got people’s attention. She seized this realization and latched onto it. The only problem with this is that once she began to prompt controversy, she couldn’t stop. There is a saying that "there is no such thing as bad publicity."
