Matthew Flinders Anglican College Year 10 Life Science Extended Experimental Investigation Disease Student - Keenan Bowen Teacher - Mr Mclean Abstract - The experiment conducted, was conducted for the purpose of seeing what effect the different antibacterial substances had on bacterial growth. Antibacterial substances such as Aqium, Dettol, Microshield, and Control (water), were all put to the test to see which ones would have the most effect on the bacterial growth of Micrococcus luteus. Micrococcus luteus The bacterial substance was added to an Agar dish, through the use of a 1 ml pipette. About 3 - 4 pre-treated antibacterial disks were then added to the Agar dish. After the addition of the antibacterial…show more content…
The substances used in this experiment were made up of Aqium, Dettol, Microshield, and Control (water). With Microshield being a hospital grade soap, Dettol being a commonly used substance on scratches, scabs etc, Aqium being a common household hand sanitiser, and Control being just water, these are, besides Control, all common antibacterials that are used everyday by people. The experiment was conducted to test the effectiveness of different antibacterial substances on bacterial growth. The results will conclude, and answer the question of ‘’just how many of substances do their apparent job of killing 99.9% of all bacteria.’’ Will the antibacterial substances do what they claim to? Bacterial growth cell numbers rather than an increase in cell size. The process in which bacterial cells divide to reproduce themselves, is known as binary transverse fission. Bacteria cells reproduce, when environmental conditions are favourable for its growth. When this occurs, the growth rate of bacteria jumps significantly, allowing them to spread rapidly. This is when the use of an antibacterial substance comes in handy. Antibacterial substances destroy bacteria or stunts their growth, called bactericidal and bacteriostatic. The active ingredient within the substance Microshield, is chlorhexidine…show more content…
Be sure to have gloves and an apron on. This will not allow the bacteria to come into contact with exposed parts of the body Place the pre-treated antibacterial disks into the relevant, inoculated dishes Do this step with clean tweezers, not fingers. This will make sure the disks have not interfered with other substances that you may have previously touched Once all antibacterial discs are in the relevant dish, replace cover on the dish, and seal tightly with Parafilm. Have a tight grip on the lid and agar dish. You do not want to slip and let the contents escape Repeat previous step with all dishes Once complete, leave all dishes in the same location, over the relevant period of time, allowing bacteria to multiply. Having all dishes in the same location, will allow the results to be more accurate. They will all be in the same humidity, temperature etc Results - The results were concluded on Monday, 2nd of November, with all agar dishes showing signs of bacteria
