When you hear the phrase social issue, a few obvious topics come to mind. These are such topics as Religion, Homosexuality, Gender Identity, Race Relations, and so on. However, I think that there is a major issue that desperately deserves to be paid attention. This is the overwhelming presence of Memes in our society and their extremely detrimental effect on the population. Memes are being used to promote stupidity and its acceptance. Corporations are taking advantage of mindless meme love to put out slews of meme related products. Meme abuse can even get to the point where they consume people on a psychological level. The broad, unfunny, and predictable Meme culture goes hand in hand with these things when you really think about it, and the reason why it’s a social issue is because it is making people stupider. There are grown adults who are incapable of getting a thought or a point across without stating it in a dumb, overused internet picture with some kind of “random” element to it. There are also parents and older people who use them to try to “get in touch” with youth, but they are only spreading the disease further. There are people who go to Walmart and buy shirts, hats, backpacks, wallets, and all manner of other products with Memes on them. Memes are something you can just Google and see, for free, at any time. These people are spending money to display their enjoyment of something that is meant to be completely pointless.
