Both patients are controversial potential candidates for liver transplantation given their diagnoses. I tried to choose the liver recipient based on facts alone, who would have a better outcome, but there is an element of emotion that is undeniable. If I were to be truly honest with myself, emotion drove my method of research which skews the end result. One life is no more valuable than the other. That is why the MELD models and UNOS criteria for the transplant “waiting list” appears so important because it creates a more level perspective when viewing transplant candidates. It would have been much easier to make a choice if the case study in chapter 8 had given lab values, vital signs, and physician progress notes rather than ‘cherry-picked’
