Contrasting time periods
Maya Del Valle grew up in the south side of Chicago influenced by African/Boricua antecedents. In her poem “Descendancy” she describes the environment and society she lived and grew up in and expresses her perspective on it. Del Valle felt differentiated in her birthplace because she claimed “the color of my skin, marks me as an alien in the country of my birthday!” (Del Valle, 1).
