Linking Legends Think about what the world will be like in the future. In Legend, Marie Lu exemplifies a country in mayhem. The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic America. The main characters Day and June have different backgrounds, but there is a strong connection between each other. The new version of America has an over-controlling government, and the military is very strict. The novel has many different themes like family and the conflict between rich and poor people. The characters’ personalities help create the themes in the futuristic setting. The personalities of Day and June relate to the main themes of Legend throughout the book. Everyone must take a test called “the Trial” when they are a certain age. People from the rich sectors always pass and people from the poor sectors usually fail or barely pass. “You think we go to labor camps if we fail? June, the only labor camps are the morgues in hospital basements.” (Lu 204) After Day tells her this, June’s eyes are finally open to the world around her. Since she grew up in the rich sector and her family was in the military, June had always assumed that the government was honorable. Day made her realize that the government is corrupt, and June joined his side. Another important theme in Legend is family. The reason Day commits all of his crimes is to help his family. When he killed June’s brother Metias, Day was stealing plague medicine from the hospital so he could help his younger brother. June also goes on her mission to hunt down Day because she wants to avenge Metias’ death. Commander Jameson and Thomas also use Day’s family as a trap to catch him. Day and June’s love for their families brought them together, and their separate backgrounds create different point of views of their
