Throughout different periods and civilizations, and even throughout the history of art itself, inspiration from previous artists’ and cultures have affected the course of history in the art world. While other countries have obvious inspirations in technique and narrative deriving from a nearby or previous city, it is also clear to see that depending on the cultures being observed that it is also somewhat easy to understand the differences between the two once we know the history behind the artwork. Even at first glance it is clear that between “Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius” and “Justinian as world Conqueror” there are aspects that you can tell are undoubtedly similar visually but digging deeper into the meaning behind them they are intended for different purposes as well. They were also very aware of the messages they wanted to portray when they were sculpting a leader or higher up in their culture. As far as messages go, during the times of the Romans their main focus was usually lineage and capturing a royal bloodline, as well as military propaganda. In the case of “Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius” it is of the latter, it depicts the ruler Marcus Aurelius sitting on the back of a horse that is prepared for war. This particular example of Greco-Roman sculpture is a gilded bronze sculpture, which was created using bronze casting. The statue is also 11 foot 6 inches high, so it is just about life size if not a bit larger.
