Almost everyone believes that technology has made life easier and that it has enabled them to perform tasks that they could not do without it. Even though technology gives the ability to let an individual do anything from anywhere with anyone, technology does not necessarily make life simpler; it tends to make life more complicated. In “Alone Together”, Sherry Turkle talks about unsettling relationships between family, friends and children due to the high usage of technology and virtual technology in their lives. In “On Habit”, Alain de Botton describes two different ways of looking at the same world around an individuals. In virtual places, such as the Internet, we can create a second life for us by creating an avatar, we can edit the life and profile we expect it to present. This gives us the opportunity to “recreate ourselves as online personae and give ourselves new bodies, homes, jobs, and romances” (Turkle 273). People like this prefer the virtual world more than the real world because they are afraid of experiencing disappointment and and rejection from others. People like this took advantage from the virtual world because it gives them the opportunity to hide from each other from the real world hoping that people in the virtual world will accept them as how they present themselves there. These people rely on peoples opinions in the virtual world rather than the people in real life. As a result, these people will begin to loose their ability to communicate outside the virtual world; however , De botton thinks that “our responses to the world are crucially mounded by whom we are with, we temper our curiosity to fit in with the expectations of others” (p 64). In other words, one depends on other people's approval in the real world and society as a whole, hoping to be accepted. One relies on technology hoping it would meet his or her needs. The promise of technology has the potential to act as a seductive force luring an individual to abuse it. Technology seduces people into thinking that it can fulfill any needs to the point where people “hope for a mechanical bride”(Turkle 264). Instead of facing the real world and look for a real bride. Technology has convinced people into actually considering robot wife to meet their wants and needs and that robots can actually replace a human in a very serious relationship. An individual will never find intimacy with robots because robots can never be programmed with genuine emotions simply because emotions only comes naturally; one is born with it not programed with it. People tend to believe that the world has very little to offer, therefore they become isolated and lean on something very easily accessible as technology, hoping it will meet their needs in life;however, De botton discusses on how one can become blinded by assuming they already know much about their world which limits their standards in life. De botton thinks that “It seems inconceivable that there could be anything new to find in a place which we have been living in for a decade or more.
