Have you ever wondered, “What is the purpose of a marching band and what good does it do?” Marching bands play huge roles pep bands at football games and during halftime shows. Marching bands’ history traced way back: the very first college to have a marching band was the University of Notre Dame in 1842. Marching bands were also used in the Civil War. Because soldiers had to march long distances with a long period of time, the marching music would compel the soldier to be more energized during the long walks along the colonies. Nowadays, marching bands have been modernized into different styles by geographic locations or their director's preference. For this type of band, in Northern California, you need multiple instruments: Trombone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo, (Alto, Tenor, Bari) Saxophone, Euphonium (or Baritone), Trumpet, French Horn, Sousaphone (or Tuba), and Percussion. These instruments are required for a band to have proper sound and cover all of the parts that the music piece requires. The most common time signatures of the music piece that a marching band play is two beats per measure. Usually, most music’s time signature are four beats per measure. The tempo is meant to match the pace of soldiers marching and to remain in step. The required materials for a marching band are countless and all materials have to be identical, but except for the drum major because the band leader has to be distinguished from the band. The important materials for a marching band include: hats, plumes, baton, gloves, shoes, socks, and uniforms. Without these materials, a marching band would be impossible to be formed. A block is an equally spaced and numbered people standing in the position of a straight line followed by the people behind them. In a block, there are ranks, center guide, diagonals, files, and drum major. The ranks are the people standing next to each other in a straight line, and it is usually an odd number in every rank. The odd number is to create each rank to have the middle person to be the center guide . A center guide is the person in the middle of the rank and their duty is to keep the right amount of space between them and the rank in front of them, usually with the distance of three feet; and a good marcher for this position is necessary. The front rank is the most important rank because their job is to keep the spacing between the people next to them and if they fail to do that, the band will not have diagonals. Diagonals are very important in marching band for an organize appearance. A fact, is that you can only see straight diagonals in a good marching band. It is required that everyone is to be on their diagonals and also correctly being in their ranks and files. A diagonal is usually best to see while the band is closely approaching towards you or from the side of the band.
