Manifest destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. This attitude helped fuel western settlement, Native American removal and war with Mexico (Manifest Destiny). As you can see that to expand America had to work for it and lies were sacrificed for the greater good and bettering the world as they knew it at that time. William Bradford the author Of Plymouth Plantation epitomizes the term because he was able to take his less than ideal childhood that saw him become an orphan at the age of seven was able to use the Bible and religion to expand his horizons and become governor of the Plymouth colony. Crevecoeur’s the author of letters from an American farmer said it best when he was emigrating from Europe, he said “Fleeing from crowded and contentious domains ruled by exploitative aristocrats and kings, immigrants flocked to “this great American asylum,” a very powerful quote that has been felt throughout American history starting with the perils of slavery that was felt throughout the African-American community for a long while, but we were eventually able to come together as a country and say everyone deserves to be free and live the life they want without being told what they must do. Abraham Lincoln was president when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed freeing the slaves so he is another example of a person willing to change the course of history and letting things evolve and create positive change for the rest of America. The civil rights movement was another event in American history that saw a lot of riots and violence to once again regain the quality that African-Americans felt they deserved at the time. Martin Luther King was a key figure during that time being the peacemaker and using nonviolence to get their message across. He was assassinated but here is another one that epitomizes the want and need for America to be equal and work together to make it one of the
