The use of literary elements in a piece of writing is unbelievably important. Literary elements bring life to literature. If you’d like to see literary elements in action, you could read “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In this particular writing, there are many elements used however there are three that standout by far; imagery, diction and repetition. Imagery is used in the text to paint a picture in the readers mind. Personification helps in bringing life to non-living things in order to highlight certain parts of the text and make it more interesting. Repetition is very apparent within the text, there are many sentences that are repeated throughout the entire piece and that is most definitely done for a reason. Without literary elements such as the three listed before, reading would be such a snooze. Imagery is a very important element incorporated into “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. Usually when a writer uses repetition, they want to make a point or emphasize a specific part of the text. “valley of Death” is one example of repetition in the poem. Tennyson clearly wanted to make clear that the 600 soldiers were riding into a valley of death; or a dangerous warzone in other words. Tennyson also wanted to make clear that even though the soldiers knew what they were riding into, they still nobly rode on; thus his use of the line “Rode the six hundred” at the end of almost every stanza. Repeition plays a big role in figuring out the themes and motifs within a literary piece. It’s not necessarily something that is needed to make a piece interesting or amazing, but it does help give a reader something to focus on and analyze as they’re
