“The Sniper” written by Liam O’Flaherty and Cranes by Hwang Sunwon are stories that place their main characters in war-torn scenarios. O’Flaherty’s tale consists of an IRA sniper who struggles with a military chess match with another sniper. Sunwon’s story depicts Songsam, a soldier, who has to decide whether to betray his friend or his duty. War is one of the few similarities both titles share. “Cranes” and “The sniper” are different because of the main characters, the themes, and the main conflicts in each.
