“The Raven,” written by Edgar Allan Poe is a lyrical narrative poem about a poor soul who lost someone dear to them named Lenore. Overcome with grief they are trying to forget about Lenore. Unexpectedly a raven arrives and becomes their companion for the night. During this poem, Poe slowly shows the speaker deteriorating. Right as the poem begins, Poe creates the atmosphere of the poem. At midnight the speaker “pondered weak and weary.” They were reading a book while in a half awake state. Just as they began to nod off “suddenly there came a tapping.” The speaker attempts to reassure themselves the tapping at the door is a visitor “and nothing more.” The poem then gives more context on the speaker. We learn that they are staying up late and reading books as an attempt to ease the “sorrow for the lost Lenore.” The speaker hesitates to open the door and repeats to himself that the knocking is “Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door.” The speaker apologizes to whoever is at the door. We know that the speaker loved Lenore very much. It is assumed Lenore is their lover although it is not explicitly stated. The Raven is also one of the main characters of this poem. The raven starts off as something that amuses the speaker. It quickly grows into something that scares the speaker. Near the end of the poem, the raven is referred to as a demon. The raven loses any innocence it had and now becomes a symbol of evil. During the poem the phrase “Night’s Plutonian Shore” appears. Plutonian is the Roman god of the underworld therefore this phrase alludes to it. This poem takes place at night and darkness takes a huge part in setting the atmosphere.
