Lake Mcconaughy: A Short Story

As I walk out of our cabin at Lake McConaughy I see a big 15 seater white van with people mingling all around it. Everybody starts to climb in and I notice that I’m the only one who is left standing outside the car, still spacing off, I got sucked back to reality by my older brother Jesse when he tosses me my dark blue beach towel at my face and says to hurry up, so we can leave. Click. My mind is racing as I buckle up, why did I agree to this, this is crazy, why are my loving parents letting me do this? Were just a few of the many questions I asked myself while nervously sitting in the car squished between my two younger brothers Cole and Kyle who are messing with my older brothers sitting in the seat in front of us. “cliff is only 10 feet above the water it’s just like dive team back home.” Knowing this made me feel a slightly better. Our group is of about 15 people my family of 7 and a few family friends plus a couple of random strangers. My little brothers Cole and Kyle decided that they should go first sense they are the youngest. They backed up about 15 feet from the edge to get a running start, then the both take off like bullets heading for the edge at top speed. They launch off the side doing flips all the way down. One by one the rest of the group follows, till I’m all alone on the top of the cliff. From below everybody was encouraging me to jump. After a small debate, I decided to take the chance and I take one step toward the edge and another and another gaining speed till, falling I’m plummeting at high speeds towards a large mass of glimmering water. About a third of the way down I regained my composure, and I straighten my flailing limbs into a perfect dive. Splash. As soon as I entered the water a feeling of serenity washed over me. I stayed under just sitting and thinking until my lungs started to scream for air. So I resurfaced poking my head above the water, seeing everyone looking relived. I asked my
