The purpose of the lab is to determine the percent yield or percent recovery of copper during the different reactions. Copper will react with nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, heat, sulfuric acid, and magnesium. During the reactions the copper will change into different compounds and then return to its original form. The first reaction is nitric acid added to less than 0.025g of copper. Sodium hydroxide is formed and then put into the centrifuge. The precipitate is heated up and put into a hot water bath. Then the sulfuric acid is added and everything is moved to an evaporating dish. Lastly, magnesium is added and will dissolve in the solution. The experiment should end up with the original copper.
