Luther Wright December 7, 2014 In August 23rd, 1978, basketball phenom Kobe Bryant was born. Bryant and his three siblings called Philadelphia, Pennsylvania home. Kobe was named after a famous beef of Kobe, Japan, which his parents seen on a restaurant menu. He received his middle name from his father nickname which was “Jelly Bean”. At the age of six Bryant father Joe Bryant left the NBA and played professional basketball across seas. Due to his new lifestyle he was forced to learn how to speak Italian and Spanish. In the summer Kobe would then come back to the United States sand play summer league basketball. Now that Bryant was back in the United States he got to spend most of his time playing basketball. While Bryant was in high school he earned a national recognition during a great season at Lower Merion High school. Kobe was one of the first freshman’s in decades to start varsity for Lower Merion’s, which they went 4-20 for three years. During Kobe junior year they assemble a 77–13 record, with Bryant playing all five positions. But in May of 1996 the first guard to ever be taken out of high school, Kobe Bryant who declared for the NBA draft. Bryant was selected 13th overall to the Charlotte Hornets. However, Lakers General Manager Jerry West saw something in Kobe Bryant other didn’t see a legend. During the day of the draft Jerry West decide to pull off a deal sending Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets and Kobe to the Los Angeles Lakers. That’s were the best duo in history of sports history occurred Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. Bryant was not very well-known as he only started in six games for the Lakers. Do to the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest Bryant gained popularity and fans with between the legs and reverse dunks. He had the whole arena off their feet including legends Larry bird, Magic Johnson, and even Michael Jordon. Do to that special dunk Kobe went on to win the Slam Dunk
