When starting my third year of medical school, I had little idea of what field I should pursue. This changed, however, when I started my first surgical rotation. It was then I discovered the thrill of the operating room and the satisfaction of working with a team to assist in the recovery of the patient. I loved the vastness of general surgery and the multiple skills required to care for each patient. With each experience, I become more convinced that general surgery is the choice for me. It is difficult to express why I have come to enjoy surgery so much. This is mainly because I find there are so many reasons to like it. From my time rowing crew in college I learned the value of being a team player. When rowing an eight man boat in crew it only takes one person to fall out of sync for the rest of the boat to fail. This is much the same in any hospital and especially a residency group. To provide the best patient care the group must work as a team to ensure changes are communicated effectively to everyone. Also like rowing each person must shoulder the responsibility of performing their tasks to achieve the overall objective. I usually rowed the stroke seat which meant it was my responsibility to set the rate the rest of the group rowed. This required the discipline to maintain this rate even when the rest pushed to go faster. Discipline is essential for any resident to finish all tasks assigned to them. I also believe I have a solid work ethic that will aid me in being a solid contributor to a residency program. I have found this to be important in not only completing the tasks assigned to you but also looking for opportunities to assist other members of your team. This will ensure all work gets completed in an efficient and complete manner. I also enjoy being able to teach and share my knowledge to my colleagues and to students I work with.
