The Spirit (Kermode) Bear Spirit Bear, also known as the Kermode bear, is a rare kind of black bear. It was named after Frances Kermode of the Royal British Columbia Museum. These majestic bears are not polar bears or albinos. They have white fur with a creamy look, brown eyes, white claws, and a soft black nose. They are called “Spirit Bear” because of how white their fur is. They are endangered bears. Maybe 100 of them exist today. It’s so sad that such bears are not very populated.
The sightings of the Kermode bear is really rare. Most of the recent sightings are in Northern Minnesota and Southern Manitoba, Canada. The most recent was in Cedar Lake, Manitoba, Canada. It was in 2004. It was a black mother and a white cub. Also, in 2000, they found 3, a mother and her 2 cubs. That was near Beausejour, Manitoba. Back in 1997, they found a Kermode bear cub near Orr, Minnesota. They named that one and it’s name was Halo. The most populated place for these bears are in the British Columbia on the islands of Princess Royal and the Gribbell Islands along the rainforest. The Kermode bear is the British Columbia’s official animal. Only 20% of the black bears on those islands are white, or the Kermode bears. All of the rest are black.
