In “The Five-Forty-Eight” by John Cheever, the narrator, Blake, steps out of an elevator to find a young woman whom he calls Miss Dent, to be waiting for him with a loathing face. Blake does not approach her and immediately gets away from her. He attempts to get away from Miss Dent by going inside a bar. Inside the bar, he bought a Gibson and he recalls the memory about the young woman whom he met six months ago. Blake had been looking for a secretary and Miss Dent had said that she had been in the hospital for eight months and that it was hard for her to find work after that. She also said that she wanted to thank him for giving her a chance. Later, Blake boarded a train and while he was waiting for the train to leave, Miss Dent found him.
