Marge Piercy named the poem “Barbie Doll” because the poem is about how a girl was told about her flaws in her outer appearance making her aware that her appearance isn’t perfect. When people think of a Barbie doll they think of it as being perfect and beautiful, which is opposite of what the girl is being portrayed as. People has a perception that women should be perfect and beautiful in their eyes. Women wants to be beautiful like a Barbie doll because they feel pressure to do so to get people to like them. Marge uses irony through the use of imagery (great big nose, fat legs) and hyperbole (cut off her nose and her legs).
