If the world were being ravaged by some very infectious virus and less than one percent of the population were immune I think it would be morally impermissible to conduct medical research against the informed consent of those people. Most, if not all ethical codes, including The Nuremberg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki emphasize the importance of informed consent in medical research practices. And I agree that consent is an important part of medical research. Without having informed consent in ethical guidelines we would not be able to trust doctors, there would be more incidents like that of Tuskegee, and the well-being of patients in general would be in jeopardy.
