Effective and Ineffective Endings of a Story A story relies heavily on its plot, characters, themes, settings, style, and tone. It also relies on its uniqueness and ability to arouse an audience’s emotion. Stories should make its reader ponder and think about things he or she might have never thought of on their own. So much detail, thought, and creativity goes into constructing and making a story. However, what is essential and differentiates a regular story from a great one is how it ends. The ending of a story can be the deciding factor on whether a story is good or not. The plot of a story can be unique and have a strong, unified structure; but if its ending is ineffective, the story loses its meaning and purpose. Authors and filmmakers use different types of methods to end a story. Some stories endings are implicit, meaning the author suggests or implies something without actually stating it. An example of this is Carlos Fuenta’s story, Aura. Stories can also have explicit endings, in which the story is clear, leaving few questions unanswered. This type of ending can be seen in Daphne du Maurier’s short story, “Don’t Look Now.” It can also be shown in the 1950s theatrical film, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel, 1956). The first ending is the original with the Dr. Miles J. Bennell (Kevin McCarthy), who is yelling in the middle of the highway. Bennell is panicking because the pods are invading the world. He constantly shouts “They're here already! You're next! You're next, you’re next...” As a viewer, this ending is quite frightening, not because he is in such a horrific state, but because no one seems to believe or even cares about what he is saying.
