In Camera The short story "In Camera" is one of the most important stories that criticizes the social system and state machinery in a fictional kingdom. The writer revealed the female inner consciousness in an effort to break her silence that surrounded her culture of abuse of which she is often a victim. The hero of this story is Laila Al-Fargani, the female protagonist who suffered a lot during her stay in prison for 126 days for doing nothing bad. She was destroyed physically and mentally; she was raped and treated with violence because her society see her as an unimportant living creature. There is no doubt that Laila paid a lot for telling her thoughts frankly to the government, which she described as stupid. She didn't do anything wrong.…show more content…
While Laila was in the prison, she was sexually and mentally abused by ten uncouth guards, who thought that they were making revenge on her by depriving her of the most valuable thing she possesses-her virginity, and that is fair when a woman commits a crime. Over three thousand and twenty five hours (126 days) Laila was in complete darkness; she was like a small animal incapable of uttering a word; she was left suffering numerous counts of rape as well as she suffered when she faced the painful bright light because her eyes didn't adjust to the light of a courtroom after the men beat her so bad that her vision became extremely blurry. She also felt terrible pain from the wound between her tights, caused by the rapers. Although Laila's body was weak like an animal, her mind kept fighting in order to survive while she was in prison.
