Belonging is determined by the needs of the individual.In order to thrive and survive each individual has both physical and psychological needs which must be fulfilled allowing them to achieve a sense of belonging.One composer that explores the impact of individual needs on a sense of belonging is Peter Skrzynecki in his anthology ‘‘immigrant chronicles’’ in particular St Patricks college, Migrant Hostel and 10 Mary street. Skrzynecki successfully does this by embarking the need for individuals to obtain acceptance within their culture, heritage and the need for individuals to develop a sense of self in order to connect with others. There is always uncertainty amongst all the changes. The family ‘‘lived like birds of passage’’ this simile exposes the fragility of the situation and a sense of dislocation from their surroundings that spreads through their lives. Through the constant change the family is confronted with it effects their need to find a stable environment to find a sense of belonging as they are having to question were they are heading and if they again will ever achieve belonging in their lives. The immigrants congregated in nationality groups in a way to find support and to create a sense of belonging amongst each other. The simile ‘‘sought each other out instinctively like a homing pigeon’’ this conveys the burning desire to seek comfort and to speak the familiarity of their own languages and to have others who also are uncertain of the situation they are placed in.Through the reference of this quote it reinforces that even through these negative experiences of the migrant hostel the mutual support allowed the development of a sense of
