In A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, the difficulty of love, a play within a play and the relationship between fantasy and reality, are all themes emphasized by the use of imagery. The two main types of imagery that Shakespeare uses in this play are dream imagery and night imagery, two terms that just happen to be in the title of the play. Another type of imagery that is used in the play is moon imagery. When the play first starts, the audience might get the feeling that the play is all about love because it begins with the topic of Theseus and Hippolyta’s marriage, but in reality it is really more of a comedy then it would be a romance. Right off the bat when Theseus and Hippolyta are discussing their wedding we are introduced to dream imagery: HIPPOLYTA. Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow New bent in the heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities. (1.1.6-10) In this quote Hippolyta is saying the four days that separate her and Theseus from their wedding will soon turn into nights and during those nights the time will pass quicker because they will dream them away. When Hippolyta is comparing the moon to a silver bow, she is describing the moon to show how bright it will be as it shines down on them on their wedding night. This moon is a symbol of love and the beginning of a new beginning. The moon is also used here to mark the passage of time. Both dream and moon imagery are used here. This is the first time both are introduced but not the last time it is seen. One of the more noticeable dream imageries is when Nick Bottom awakes from his experience his human head has been restored from the asses head that he believed to be a dream.
