The death of Homer In the story the “A rose for Emily” the protagonist Emily Grierson killed her boyfriend Homer. Emily does the by using “Arsenic” (“a poison used to get rid of unwanted varmints”). Many questions come from this. One being What would lead Emily do something this extreme?
The first thing to consider when trying to come up with the answer to the questions that may arise from the murder of Homer is the traumatic experience she had with the death of her father. Her father spent much of his time denying young men the right to be with his daughter. “Being left alone and pauper, she had become humanized’’ (Faulkner 723). This shows us that after her father died she kept to herself and lived a poor life style. Her living a poor lifestyle is an extremely important detail in the story. This shows us that she was left alone with no friends or family truly comfort her when she needed it. “She carried her head high enough even when we believed it had fallen” (Faulkner 724). This quote shows us that she was barely staying sane due to the fact of the circumstances. This may show us that she killed Homer because she did not want to lose another person that she truly
