September 25, 2014 Lord of the Flies is a story by William Golding about a group of boys from Great Britain who plane crash land on an island. They include ages from 6 to 12. They have no authority figures and are forced to try to adapt on how to survive. They have to keep hope to be rescued at some point in time in the future. They were able to form a semi-functional type of society in which certain boys are able to contribute in different ways. Each character has different viewpoints on the situation, and what should be done for the better of the entire group of boys. Also, different characters have more or less say on what should and shouldn’t be done. The four major characters discussed in this novel are Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and Simon. Out of all the boys stuck on the island, Ralph seems to be the least bit worried. He firmly believes they will be rescued, and thinks of his father coming to save them. “Sooner or later a ship will put in here. It might even be Daddy’s ship. So you see, sooner or later, we shall be rescued” (37). Ralph is a strong and intelligent leader, and he makes rules in order to keep the group of boys safe until they are finally rescued. One of the most important rules is to keep the signal fire burning at all times no matter what, “The fire is the most important thing on the island… Don’t you understand? Can’t you see we ought to-ought to die before we let the fire out?” (81). “The talk of the beast makes Ralph’s authority grow weaker as he is almost losing control. “Something he has not known was there rose in him and compelled him to make the point loudly and again.’But I tell you there isn’t a beast!’” (37).
