Do Not Panic, it is just Science If scientist want to create a black hole that could destroy the earth sucking us all into the abyss-let them. Throughout history many scientific discoveries have been made or experiments been performed that the majority of people do not agree with in the beginning because they, most people, do not agree that humans have the right to “play God”. As the earth and its’ people progress so do the discoveries that rock people's ideas on how the world works. When Galileo discovered that the sun not the earth was the center of our solar system and tried…show more content… Hawthorne implies messing with nature is dangerous and should not be done in his story “The Birthmark” however, many scientific discoveries can be made using the mentality that we can change nature for the greater good. In “The Birthmark” Alymer is disgusted with his wife’s birthmark on her face and is determined to get rid of it, using his scientific background to help him. In the end he does manage to remove the birthmark off her face however, she does die in his lab because of his efforts. With her last words she states “you have rejected the best earth could offer” (Hawthorne). Hawthorne is obviously attempting to show that tampering with what is natural is wrong and should not be done. Modern science would disagree though, Alymer did kill his wife but he learned a valuable lesson on what does not work in regards to safely removing deep birthmarks (Hawthorne). With proper science one would go
