The unique, 802,701, futuristic society that the majority of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells is set during has an enormous impact on many of the characters and the decisions they make throughout the novel. One obvious example of the impact that time has is a character named Weena. Weena is a soft, gentle soul, that embodies the spirit of the fragile, naïve Eloi: "she...ran along by the side of me, occasionally darting on either hand to pick flowers to stick in my pockets. My pockets had always puzzled Weena, but at the last she had concluded that they were an eccentric kind of vase for floral decoration (Wells 44). The setting has even affected how the Eloi look. In comparison to 20th or 21st century humans, the Eloi are weak and doll like, with soft, hairless faces and small, fragile bodies. They do not work or fight. They simply play until they are hungry, eat until they are tired, and sleep until they wish to play once more.
