Throughout Steinbeck’s writing in these two chapters of “The Grapes of Wrath” it becomes apparent that through rough situations causes a shift in man to become more and more inhuman, which only leads to greater suffering. In seems true to say that in rough times often only get rougher due to the instant panic and chaos of ones natural fear to fail. Through Steinbeck’s writing it clearly demonstrates the different social and economic situations that are the greatest barriers for people both in past and present day. Most clearly exemplified through these two chapters are the rich versus the poor, the landowner versus the tenant, and the employer versus the worker. Although the separation between economic and social classes in the past had more drastic consequences, they are still relatable in many ways too with the decline in job opportunities and the struggle that many families are forced to face in their every time life.…show more content…
Unfortunately, due to the tough times of the Great depression the poor were so desperate for work in order to make money and try to provide what little the could for their family. This was often very little and just barely enough to feed them in order to survive. This desperation caused for people to be willing to take any job even for little money, creating an even greater divide in the population and ultimately allowing the privileged population even more power over the poor. Ultimately the plight affecting the Joad’s and other Dust Bowl refugees is an issue with the people in charge during this time.
