Throughout the novel, The Moviegoer, Kate is lost, lost in thought. She can not handle the stress of everyday life so she chooses not to try; by the end of the story, she asks Binx to control every aspect of her life so she does not have to do so. Kate also falls in and out of depression. Since the death of her fiancé Lyell, she is extremely spontaneous. Kate also falls in and out of relationships again in efforts to find her way. Kate is constantly looking for a way out and even goes as far as to attempt suicide. Kate tries to get out of her depressive, lost state in many ways,she tries getting other people to dictate her life, starting snd ending relationships and suicide. It is hard for Kate to balance everyday life. She is unstable even sine her fiancé Lyell died in a car accident. She just flows through life doing as people tell her and only doing things if they are completely necessary. When Kate accepts the marriage proposal from Binx she wants more than just love, she asks for Binx's advice and guidance through her life. In the epilogue of the novel, the reader sees Binx telling Kate exactly what to do, in excoriating detail. "They all think any minute I'm going to commit suicide. What a joke. The truth of course is the exact opposite: suicide is the only thing that keeps me alive. Whenever everything else fails, all I have to do is consider suicide and in two seconds I'm as cheerful as a nitwit. But if I could not kill myself -- ah then, I would. I can do without nembutal or murder mysteries but not without suicide. "(Percy). Kate claims that the idea of escaping though suicide is what keeps her going.
