President Wilson believed that it was the job of Americans to show the power of democracy throughout the world. America intervened in Mexico because of the assassination of Francisco Madero by Victoriano Huerta. Madero had recently led a revolution to overthrow the dictator, Porfirio Diaz. The assassination was supported by the U.S. Ambassador and American companies that had influence in the industries in Mexico but was not approved by President Woodrow Wilson. The president did not support Huerta’s coup. He believed that Madero was a good president for Mexico. He sent soldiers to Vera Cruz in order to keep shipments of weapons away from Huerta’s troops. The people of Mexico did not see American forces as being there to help them and attacked.
