Ludwig van Beethoven and his Moonlight Sonata When discussing the transitional period between Classical and Romantic eras, Ludwig van Beethoven is considered by many to be the one of the most influential and renowned composers of this era. Despite many difficulties in his childhood and adult life, Beethoven still produced many musical masterpieces: nine symphonies, five concertos for piano, one violin concerto, thirty-two piano sonatas and sixteen string quartets. Almost two hundred years later, Beethoven is still considered a household name and his music continues to impress. Although never recorded, Beethoven’s birth date is speculated to be 16 December 1770. He was born to Johann van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Keverich. It would seem that musical abilities ran in the family. Ludwig’s grandfather was a renowned bass singer in his own right, while Ludwig’s father was a tenor; both were employed at the court of the Electorate of Cologne. Beethoven’s first music teacher was his father.
