From the collection of vignettes in The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros reveals through Esperanza’s and other’s voices, that many aspects of Esperanza’s life do not positively contribute to who she truly is, and desires to be. When Esperanza’s parents build up an idea of buying a new, magnificent house for their family, Esperanza’s begins to dream up a new, glamorous image of herself. When her parents talk to her and her siblings they express, “Our house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. This was the house Papa talked about…”(1). When the family finally buys a house, it turns out none of Esperanza’s parents’ promises are true, and the house includes none of Esperanza's expectations.
